First Up? – What to expect from New Arsenal boss, Unai Emery
New Arsenal Boss, Unai Emery was confirmed on Wednesday morning.
The 46-year-old Spaniard has been appointed to succeed Arsene Wenger, the Frenchman leaving after 22 years at the helm. Emery arrives after leaving Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season and brings with him a wealth of European experience including three Europa League titles.
Fellow countryman Mikel Arteta was considered the long time favourite for the role before the club had an 11th hour change of heart instead opting for Emery after what CEO Ivan Gazidis called “a wide-ranging and rigorous search”.
After a thorough process, the Emirates hierarchy decided that Emery’s vast experience was key, and meant he would be offered the job ahead of former player Mikel Arteta.
While the Manchester City coach greatly impressed in interviews, and sources say he ticked many of the boxes, the fact this would have been his first managerial job also weighed on the Arsenal decision maker’s minds. Arteta’s camp are understood to have been told on Monday that they were going with Emery, with the news also spreading to many Arsenal players.
He may have spent barely a full day in charge of the gunners but the spaniard has already announced his intention to keep the club’s talents around.
Speaking at his unveiling conference, Emery said “He [Mesut Ozil] is one of the biggest talents here at Arsenal and I want talented players here.” He added, ” I want to speak to hi, about how exciged I am to be here. I want all the players to feel that”
German midfielder Ozil has spent 5 years at the Emirates following a big money move from Realmadrid. But has come under continous criticism for an alleged lack of committment to the team.
Emery further stated when asked about the situation of Jack Wilshere ” This team is a big team with big players, great players and I think we need to change little things.”
This would have sparked mixed thoughts among the Arsenal squad but this is surely a signal that some of Arsenal’s big boys are clearly in Unai’s immediate plans.
He was officially unveiled on wednesday 23rd May.
